Social distancing has become the new norm brought on by the pandemic. With people staying in the confines of their homes and being able to work flexibly from home, the internet has proven to be useful in productivity and passing the time. The lockdown has allowed people to embrace social media even more with a rise in screen time usage, 25% increase in Instagram and TikTok engagement, and also with a 72% increase in content created by influencers.
Seeing as it might take a while until things go back to what it used to be, we are left to deal with this new normal. As a brand, you might be thinking how best to make the most out of this opportunity. Any event can prove to be opportune if you know how to play the game, so here is what your brand can do in social media to adapt to this new normal.
Using your platform for good
In the face of the crisis, research by Kantar shows that the 92% of the population thinks that brands should not stop advertising. But should a brand communicate with its audience, it should perfect the balancing act: be one that is socially relevant whether to local governments, health organizations, or current affairs while at the same time maintain its brand values. There is some real expectation that companies should also play their part for good and use its presence and audience to get the word out. Examples of these are brands giving away part of their products for the frontline workers, making donations to health workers, and giving free subscriptions to their services. There are many ways to be able to help and integrate your product or service at the same time and you can always go creative with the ideas.
Know what your audience wants
The key to being able to put out the right content is to think from the perspective of your audience and ask yourself: what would they want to see from you? There is no one formula for this and is very dependent on your product/service and how you interact with your audience on social media. Here are some pointers to be able to make an effective strategy:
Keeping the content you post authentic and relatable is always key in social media even before the crisis happened. The best approach is still to make the posts seem authentic and homegrown instead of looking very polished. People scroll in their social media feeds because they want to be entertained and not because they want a product shoved into their faces. People want something they can connect and relate with and at the time of pandemic it’s content about staying at home, just like everyone is, that is relatable.
Another key is to be interactive with the content you put out. With people staying at home away from the hustle and bustle of everyone, connecting with them is even more important. Making a game, a video challenge in Tiktok, or even a Facebook or Instagram live are all possible directions your brand can go to. Finding the intersection of what your brand offers to what channel can best capture an interactive experience for your audience is a good starting place.
Be creative
Even when most marketers and creatives do not have the benefit of a big-scale production at the time of pandemic doesn’t mean that there won’t be creative ways to engage with customers from home. Experimenting with ideas such as face filters, effects, and GIFs on Tiktok, Instagram, and Snapchat are just some ways to keep your audience entertained in a creative way. AR and VR experiences together with live broadcasts are also another way to go with giving your audience an experience from inside their home through live streaming. This can be mixed with more interactive content such as live Q&A’s, games, and more.
With the pandemic sending everyone in quarantine, now isn’t the best time to further distance yourself with your audience by having content that is out of touch when everyone is in isolation and is social distancing. Now is the best time to test new waters to see new ways to connect with your audience.
